FOR THE
PRICE OF A CUP OF COFFEE
Takeaway coffee cups driving hidden plastic catastrophe
"FOR THE PRICE OF A CUP OF COFFEE" This was one of the first documentaries that got me interested in the impacts of our consumption's and our exploitations of the natural world. We are creatures of convenience in my opinion used to making comfortable choices and leaving the hard once to be dealt with in later times.
Treading everyday into the world with our motivations marked by career goals, social offsets and peer pressure the reality of the world we walk on is alien to most of us.
6.5 Billion trees in the garbage
We
consume coffee every day, most of us don't even realise what that cup of coffee
costs, its much beyond the $3 or $4, its beyond arabica beans, mocha's and
latte, and definitely beyond a beverage to set our day right. our consumption
is changing the world we live in, minute by minute, interestingly I ran into a
very interesting article in the Daily Telegraph by Andrew Carswell from July
16, 2013 he points out, "we now pay $3 billion a year just to
get our daily fix" (http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/nsw/morning-fix-of-coffee-costs-nation-a-cool-3-billion-a-year/news-story/ff3c0a0db599b5d63758b712fa2115cc)
our
love of consumption is costing Sydneysiders more than our annual electricity
bill (http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/lifestyle/having-a-takeway-coffees-twice-day-costs-sydneysiders-more-than-annual-electricity-bill/news-story/c327c8223f0db5f6429c9a31ce1cacdd).
but we are still unable to comprehend the impacts these cups are having on our
world, making it off each cup at a time in a bin and from a bin to a land fill,
it could be recyclable, it could be biodegradable but how long would it take
for us to regrow what we are taking from the nature, i am not pointing numbers I
am not basing all this on research I am just making an observation on the
choices we are making, a mug that we can wash and reuse for years vs a piece
that will have no value to anyone, i do wish someday for all of us to visit a
landfill, see what we are consuming, smell what we have discarded and truly
feel the impact our everyday life is having on the future we might not live to
see.
